A Week Full of Charity Events
Dueling for Dollars will technically kick off Giving Tuesday (November 28th), but all the tournaments will be held the first weekend of December. Below is the schedule of events.
The Intersection of Competition and Charity
The goal of Dueling for Dollars is to bring us all together for some serious competition while still doing good. The week of festivities will kick off with a charity drive, and the following weekend will include of the charity tournaments.
Choose Your Charity
The pool of donations given away in each tournament go to charities chose by top players. When you enter one of the tournaments, you'll declare your charity. If you place high enough in the event (or win a random prize), your chose charity will be the beneficiary of the funds.
Valid Charities
To keep things simple (since I'm a 1 person army), you must choose a charity listed on Tiltify. Quite frankly, I just don't have time to research and verify everyone's favorite cause. Tiltify supports many of the most recognizable charity organizations, so there is a good chance your cause/org is supported. If the organization you want to represent is not on Tiltify, then this is a good excuse to lobby that site to add them. This way any streamer can raise money for that org.
Default Charity: The Hunger Project
In case you don't select a charity, or make an invalid selection, the default charity for all the events will be The Hunger Project.
Why Charity Tournaments
I've always felt at odd with tournaments that give away large cash prizes. I find that this incentivizes bad actors to come out of the woodwork and hustle for some quick cash. This tends to create a very sweaty experience, which is discouraging to newer and more casual players. I don't think there is anything wrong with dialing in and playing your best. But let's face it: some gaming communities (like SAP) are not large enough to have a huge tournament of only sweats. Plus the next cracked SAP player might be out there, but afraid to join a super competitive scene. Fun themed events for charity that include great players might be the catalyst that gets them to join the Dojo, Team Tour, etc.
Prizes are Relative
In the past I've run events with money as the prizes, but I ignorantly forgot how the gaming world is a global community. Maybe $50 USD isn't a big enough prize in my eyes to cheat or make black hats move to win; however, 50 bucks USD to someone else, especially from another country, might be worth keeping someone's stream open while they play. Since these aren't LAN events, and I don't have a staff to police cheating, I'd rather just make it as unlikely as possible from the start. You'd have to be a special kind of loser to cheat in a charity event.
Also to me, winning the largest SAP tournament ever is a good enough prize.
Event Update: Test Server Allowed
Today TWG released a new patch on the test server. Many players are excited about the changes, so we want to make them available for those that can access it. The test server is available to play via browser, but won't work on mobile. If you and your opponent are capable of connecting to the test server, and want to play your match there, then you may do so. Note that both players must have access and agree to the test server match. If one player can't get onto the server or votes "no" for test server, then their match will be played on the live app.
